The self-assembly of copolymers into spatially modulated phases on the length scale of tens of nanometers offers opportunities for fabricating e.g., microelectronic structures. Applications often require extremely low density of defects and the alignment and registration of the copolymer morphology with external boundaries. Since the free-energy landscape of copolymer materials exhibits a multitude of metastable minima that correspond, e.g., to local defects, external guiding fields are required to direct the self-assembly.
Using computer simulation we illustrate different processing protocols, e.g., thermal annealing, electric fields, roll-casting or spray coating and discuss how these influence the kinetics of structure formation and determine defect density and alignment of the morphology.
