The flow of suspensions is a subject fundamental interest and plays an important role in a wide variety of environmental and technological processes. Suspensions are usually thought of as a composite of solid inclusions embedded in a matrix fluid. Such systems can be quite complex and represent a great challenge to model as one may need to account for particle shape and size distribution, particle interactions and a matrix fluid that may have complex behaviour as well. In this presentation I will give an overview of our research activities concerning the computational modelling of the flow of suspensions. Examples will be given from modelling idealized systems such as suspensions composed of hard spheres or superballs to modelling realistic systems such as cement based materials.
I will also discuss our modelling efforts to account for suspension flow in pipes and non-trivial geometries including rheometers and their calibration by using standard reference materials. Future research needs will also be discussed.
