Since the seminal work of Lars Onsager, hard spherocylinders have been used as a model system for liquid crystals. We will present recent computer simulation work on percolation in suspensions of spherocylinders, as a simple model for conducting composite materials. We will discuss the impact of polydispersity and alignment on the percolated network. Then we will extend the model by a charge helix to model cholesteric liquid crystals. If one wishes to observe a cholesteric phase, it is not a priori clear how to handle the boundaries of a simulation box. We will present a self-consistent method to solve this problem.
