The use of mechanical force to activate chemical bonds in polymers offers opportunities to explore new types of chemical reactivity, with applications in ‘smart’ materials. Research in my group in this area has resulted in an extremely sensitive method to detect molecular scale damage in polymeric materials, and has led to the development of catalysts that can be activated with mechanical force.

In my talk, I will present our efforts to use mechanical activation of latent catalysts for self-healing in polymers, and I will discuss how we have developed mechanoluminescence as a tool to learn about molecular scale failure mechanisms in polymeric materials.
