Organic and Perovskite Solar Cells (OSC and PSC) have attracted much attention in the scientific community due to their potential as low-cost renewable energy technology. Although rather different with respect to the absorber materials both types of solar cells can be processed from solution at low temperatures. This enables the use of flexible substrates and thus continuous roll-to-roll processing. This talk shall give an overview of the working principles of OSC and PSC and illustrate their optimization potential. Different characterization methods are presented which are used to gather further insight. The interpretation of experimental data is often facilitated by numerical simulations. An example will be given where this combination of experiment and theory is especially useful, i.e., the limitation of solar cell performance by surface recombination at bsorber/contact interfaces. At the end of the talk challenges for up-scaling will be identified.
