LECTURES, RESEARCH AND REWORK SEMINARS

Every lecture (3 hours altogether) will be illustrated by two research seminars and a “rework” seminar during which the young researchers shall explore the topic more deeply with the lecturer after having gone through his/her lecture.

Concepts and methods in soft matter: Tailor-made polymers (introductory lecture)

Rolf Mülhaupt, University of Freiburg, Germany

Physical concepts of macromolecules

Alexei Likhtman, University of Reading, UK

  • Experimental probes of polymer dynamics
  • Single chain dynamics - from microscopic to Rouse models
  • Chain interactions and entanglements
  • Tube and slip-spring models

Polymer synthesis and structure formation

Felix H. Schacher, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany

  • Basic polymer synthesis (chain growth, step-growth; ionic, radical, insertion polymerization)
  • Advanced polymer synthesis (living / controlled techniques)
  • Copolymers. block copolymers, different architectures (linear, branched, star, comb)
  • Polymer modification and functionalization
  • Polymerization methodologies (solution, bulk, emulsion – practical aspects)
  • Basic concepts in block copolymer self-assembly

Visualization of organic nanostructures and their properties

Joachim Loos, DSM Resolve, Geleen, Netherlands

  • Visualization toolbox
  • Polymer crystals
  • Nanocomposites
  • Organic electronics

POSTER SESSIONS

All students shall present a poster during the poster sessions. The posters will be put up at the beginning and will be displayed for the whole time of the school. Regarding the poster sessions please send an abstract (one page) presenting the results and the main questions of your research project and the strategies to solve them. The best poster will be awarded.

CAREER PROSPECTS

Several sessions will be dedicated to career perspectives. A broad range of career opportunities will be addressed, in particular science research in the industry.
