Green energy is a worldwide major concern. The development of new batteries, solar cells, ot fuel cells all rely on a same science, which is electrochemistry. It is mainly devoted to describe what happens at the interface between an electrode, which provides or pumps electrical charges, and a liquid electrolyte, which pumps or provides ionic species exchanging with uncharged material at the electrode surface. Up to now, electrochemists were condemned to work blind because there was no way to directly image electrode surfaces at work with molecular sensitivity. The ElectroChemical Optical Microscope (ECOM) brings this possibility. ECOM is based on the discovery of new optical components which are at the same time anti-reflecting and conductive. I will describe these components and illustrate the ECOM capabilities with two examples: in situ imaging of graphene oxide monolayers and real time imaging of electrical double layers.
